Carle Place Community Defies Weather Conditions to Honor Two of Their Own, Leanne Kozak and Lynn DeVivo

January 7th 2017

Despite the years first big snowfall, blustery winds, near white out conditions, and very, very cold temperatures. Members of the Carle Place community braved the elements and turned out in droves to celebrate and honor the lives of two of their own, Leanne Kozak and Lynn Devivo, who lost their battles with Melanoma, the deadliest form of Skin Cancer.

The event organizer Paul Steck (Melanoma Survivor), his wife Maria, daughter Natalie, the Carle Place Community, and the family and friends of Leanne and Lynn continue to raise awareness and spread the “Be Sun Smart” message to prevent Skin Cancer Melanoma. Protect Yourself From the Dangerous and Deadly UV Rays of the Sun; Wear sunscreen daily, hats, sunglasses, and UV clothing; See Your Dermatologist Yearly, and Don’t Use Tanning Beds!

The evening’s event was a huge success. It was held at Manning’s Restaurant and Pub located in Carle Place; featuring food, drinks, dancing, magic, music, door prizes, silent and Chinese auctions and more.

CCMAC THANKS Natalie Steck, Jessica Pisani, Julia Beattie and our MC Thomas Vestuto for all their help making the event a success!

Bethpage, Long Island Air Show

May 2012: Skin Cancer Screenings were provided at the Long Island Air Show held at Jones Beach, Memorial Day Weekend. What better way to start your summer than with a Skin Cancer Check up, and information on how to protect yourself from the dangerous rays of the sun. CCMAC thanks Bethpage Federal Credit Union, sponsor of the Jones Beach Air Show for inviting us to educate and screen attendees during this Memorial Day Weekend Event. We are grateful for the services of Dr. Steve McClain who never says no, and Dr. Ted Daly who conducted skin cancer screenings during this event.

Bethpage Credit Union, Long Island Air Show

May 2009: The Memorial Day Weekend Air Show held at Jones Beach provided an excellent opportunity to raise awareness regarding the dangers of unprotected sun exposure, Skin Cancer / Melanoma. We were delighted to respond to the invitation of the Bethpage Credit Union, the lead sponsor of the Air Show. Dermatologists did spot checks in the CCMAC tent on both days. Thanks again to the sponsorship of OSI Pharmaceutical Foundation, a full page ad containing BE SUN SMART® information outlining regular self body exams was given to every person entering the event. It was estimated that close to 400,000 attended during the course of the two day show. Below (L) Dr. Ted Daly of Garden City Dermatology; as well as Pat Coyne & Kathy Antonacci (Below Right). Kathy works tirelessly to educate others regarding the disease. She lost her beloved husband Guy to Melanoma last year.

Sunset and Lobster Bake

“Sun Smart”

Sunset and Lobster Bake

Dockers Waterside

This past August CCMAC held it’s first summer fundraiser, a Sunset and Lobster Bake in the Hamptons.  What better place to increase awareness of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure than in the Hamptons, where so many individuals and their families enjoy the beach.  We would like to especially thank former Southampton Town Supervisor Vince Cannusccio for his support in helping make this event a huge success. We would also like to thank Maureen Dolan for her efforts in coordinating this event and the Irish American Society for their continued support.

In addition we would like to thank the town board of Southampton under the direction of Supervisor Skip Heaney and especially Councilwoman Linda Kabot who recognizes and supports the need for increased awareness of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure in our communities year round.  Ms. Kabot whose own life has been touched through friends who have had Melanoma has pledged to distribute informational materials, videos, posters and brochures to libraries and recreational facilities through out the town.  We thank her and all the members of the town board for hearing our message “Be Sun Smart”!

Mauer Breast Cancer Cross Education Initiative

Melanoma and Breast Cancer, A Cross Education Initiative

Preventing Cancer Together

CCMAC for the past two years has been providing video and print educational and awareness materials to both the public and professionals in attendance at the annual Mauer Breast Cancer Foundation sponsored conference on Breast Cancer. CCMAC commends the Mauer Foundation for their continuing efforts against breast cancer and recognizing the need for cross education efforts regarding all cancers. We are also very grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of their annual conference as well as their annual “Run / Walk for Mom”. Cancer Prevention and Awareness Campaigns must be expanded to educate the public about the many dangers they face in their day-to-day lives.

The message of being Sun Smart takes on an even more significant meaning to those women who are being treated for Breast Cancer, as some medications and radiation increases their risks in the sun.

In addition CCMAC was able to participate in the Mauer Foundations Annual Run / Walk for Moms, and provide educational awareness materials and Sun Screen to the many who were running and walking in the sun that day.
