Assemblyman Thomas P. DiNapoli, 16th Assembly District, Nassau County
“Tom” DiNapoli has been “making a difference” since he was a young man. He first gained recognition in 1972, at the age of 18, as the youngest person in New York State to hold public office when he was elected as a Trustee of the Mineola Board of Education. This election prompted passage of legislation, signed by Governor Nelson Rockefeller, establishing the right of 18 to 21 year-olds to hold public office in New York State. DiNapoli served on the school board for ten years, including two terms as President.
He was born in Rockville Centre, grew up in Albertson, graduated from Mineola High School, earned his Bachelor’s Degree (magna cum laude) in History, from Hofstra University. He earned a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management as well as a Certificate in Labor Relations from The New School University.
In 1986 Tom was elected to the N.Y. State Assembly, representing 16th Assembly District in Northwestern Nassau County. During his nine terms in the State Assembly, issues such as education, environment, budgeting, and veterans’ affairs have all been areas in which he has made an impact. Tom’s 17 years in Albany, his strong working relationship with members from both political parties has enabled him to make important long lasting contributions to the people of Long Island and New York State. His current Legislation highlighting the need for moderate housing here on Long Island, co-sponsored with Senator Balboni shows concern not only for present generations but focuses on providing affordable living for our sons and daughters in addition to all those hoping to work and live productive lives.
His concern for a “healthy Long Island” led to sponsoring the historic Superfund / Brownfields Law, signed by the Governor in 2003. This landmark legislation provides for the clean up of New York’s most polluted sites and established redevelopment of contaminated Brownfields sites. Long Island Pine Barrens Protection Act is one of the many of a long list of legislative accomplishments benefiting Long Islanders.
For seven years he worked with breast cancer activists and health, school and environmental advocates to require prior neighbor notification before pesticide spraying. Realizing “Cancer is Cancer” Tom has been a friend to CCMAC since day one. His encouragement and sincere support has been constantly present, without having to ask. Always available to listen and lead by his very presence Tom is a great example to the Great Neck Middle and High School Students at their yearly “Miles for Melanoma” walk. His participation when possible is a highlight for them.
He is an example for all who see their neighbor as their concern, along with the environment they live in. We are enriched by Tom’s friendship and sincere caring. He is without a doubt someone WHO MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

CCMAC was proud to honor one of its biggest supporters, Tom Dinapoli. Tom has been there for CCMAC since the beginning. We honored Tom DiNapoli for his continued compassion, commitment, support and leadership in the fight against Melanoma Skin Cancer. Tom was the first to propose a bill in New York state to regulate tanning parlors. He remains committed to real issues that affect the people of Long Island.
